Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are effective energy transferring devices that work to transfer heat energy from a source to a heat sink. By absorbing heat from cold spaces and releasing it to warm spaces, heat pumps move thermal energy around in the opposite direction of spontaneous heat transfer. 

Using only a small amount of external energy, heat pumps accomplish energy transfer with four main components, including a condenser, an expansion valve, an evaporator and a compressor. When these components circulate a heat transfer medium, they create a refrigerant.
